we think of this song as such an 80s pop standard, but i think it the best somber/emotional pop dance tune. the beat, mood, and lyrics - on the surface - are optimistic, but really its not as soft a sweet as we picture such songs. she made it a hit because she was able to tap into the emotion of the lyric without bringing us down (i.e. making it a depressing fucking song). 
WHIT thanks for making us want to sing, dance, and feel at the same time. i.e. WHIT I FEEL YOU. 
i love her and the song, but homegirl was fucked up, so RIP. in the true sense of the abbreviation.
chaka khan, mariah, adele: its all on you guys now.
